Mary Lou Retton is considered a pioneer in women’s gymnastics. She was the first woman to win the overall gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles (a title she held for 20 years after). The gymnastics manoeuvre known as the “Retton Flip” is named after her. Inducted into the National Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.
