Mark Spitz is a swimmer who won nine gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze medal at the Olympics over the course of four years. In addition, he won five Pan American gold medals, thirty-one Amateur Athletic Union championships, and eight National Collegiate Athletic Association championships. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, he won seven gold medals, a record that stood until 2008, when Michael Phelps won eight medals.
