The stakes have never been higher in the sixth and final season of TNT’s criminal drama Animal Kingdoms. The four Cody boys are still struggling to make a name for themselves and support themselves in Oceanside after losing Smurf (Ellen Barkin). In the double-header debut, the past still has an impact on the present, and the Codys are once more plagued by it. In its last season, the TNT crime drama explores the issue of whether the Codys will be able to escape this dangerous lifestyle unscathed once more.

Outstanding opening episodes that set the tone for Animal Kingdom’s last season were “1992” and “Rise.”

The sixth season of Animal Kingdom moves the focus of the flashbacks from Smurf to her children while still using them to show Smurf’s early involvement with organised crime. In the flashback episodes, Pope, Julia, and Baz, now teenagers, have begun performing their tasks without Smurf, but things don’t go as planned. In Animal Kingdom’s concluding season, these flashbacks play a crucial part in completing the cycle.

Of Animal Kindom’s two premiere episodes, “Rise” is unquestionably the superior one. From a narrative perspective, it offers a credible account of the Codys taking charge of their own life. While Deran (Jake Weary) takes on the role of family head, Pope (Shawn Hatosy) is shown rekindling his love for skating, which was damaged by Smurf when he was younger.

He seems to no longer have any affection for Craig (Ben Robson), and he has become increasingly distant, making him more dangerous than ever. Now that he is much more responsible, Craig avoids anyone who might endanger his sobriety. In the meantime, J (Finn Cole) carries on with his plans to restart the family’s life with fresh connections and employees.

In “1992,” which begins Animal Kingdom’s final season with a typical bang, the Codys pull off their first robbery of the year. This robbery has a surprising twist, unlike many of the Codys’ past heists. The Codys decided to plunder Gia’s business as a form of vengeance for not doing business with them in season 5 rather than assaulting the competitors Gia instructed them to pillage.

The value of this robbery lies not in the startling twist but rather in the camaraderie that the boys demonstrate. Additionally, the four Cody guys’ seamless cooperation throughout this crime is a rare event. Pope and Craig gain entry through the building’s roof, and J conceals the sound of their forcible entry with pyrotechnics.

Deran assists by driving the escape vehicle and hiding from the cameras. The assignment is completed without a hitch, even after the boys go so far as to set fire to Gia’s warehouse.

Prior to her on-screen appearance, Julia was only referred to as J’s mother. When she overdosed in the season 1 pilot, J was left in the care of his estranged grandmother and uncles. In the two brief episodes that depict Julia as a teenager, Animal Kingdom has already started to provide some clarifications about Julia’s character. In “1992” and “Rise,” she made a point of underlining her hostility toward her mother, which is partly motivated by Smurf’s jealousy, as if her remarks about Smurf’s habits as a youngster weren’t obvious enough.

Pope, Deran, Craig, and J finished the season on the same page despite their numerous setbacks. With Season 6 already introducing a few new characters to be on the lookout for and the Codys’ list of adversaries growing daily, only time will tell who can be trusted. The only thing that seems clear about Animal Kingdom’s last season is that “1992” and “Rise” are merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of drama and secrets from the Codys’ past.
